What We Need From You

Whether you apply online or send in the paper application, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive the following supporting materials to ensure your application file is complete:

  1. Application Fee: A non-refundable fee of $70 for all international students applying for admission must be submitted. The check must be written on a U.S. bank, a foreign bank with a U.S. correspondent, or a U.S. money order. Your application will not be processed without this fee. Students who apply online are required to pay the application fee electronically with either a debit or credit card (MasterCard or VISA), or an electronic check.
  2. SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Plus Writing Test Scores: Virginia Tech's CEEB code is 5859; the ACT code is 4420.
  3. TOEFL: Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Scores should be received on or before March 1. To have your TOEFL score automatically sent to Virginia Tech, please specify Virginia Tech's CEEB code (5859) on the test form.
  4. Educational Documents: All documents in a language other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations. Notarized translations alone will not be accepted. Translations supplement, but do not replace original documents. Remember to send both.
    • Diplomas/Certificates: Students who have completed secondary school or high school must submit copies of their diplomas or school leaving certificates. Report of scores on school leaving examinations must also be submitted.
    • Transcript/Statement of Marks: This contains the record of courses studied, marks (grades) awarded, length of class periods, and grading scale with minimum passing mark. These must be submitted for upper secondary or high school years and must be complete for applicants who have graduated from school. For those applicants who are still enrolled in school, the transcript, or statement of marks, must show the most current term of grades to date. The transcript must be an original copy, certified by the sending institution.
  5. Financial Certification Form (page 4 of the application): This form must be completed and signed by the student’s sponsor or guarantor and returned to Virginia Tech.
  6. F-1 or J-1 Transfer Clearance Form (page 5 of the application): This form must be completed by all freshmen applicants attending high school in the United States and transfer students attending college in the U.S. Please complete and return this form to Virginia Tech. Students who cannot show evidence of their legal status in the United States cannot be issued an I-20 or DS-2019 for Virginia Tech.
  7. Official Letter or Statement from Parent(s) or Sponsor(s) Bank: This letter or statement must show that funds are available for the first year of enrollment. Please see “Expenses at Virginia Tech.”
  8. Sponsorship Letter: A current bank or government sponsorship letter guaranteeing payment for tuition and fees, books, room and board, medical insurance, and personal expenses for two semesters and summer living expenses is required. Figures must be in U.S. dollar amounts or U.S. dollar equivalent. Applicants who have been awarded a scholarship from an international agency or from their government must attach a letter of award to the Financial Certification Form (page 4 of the application).
  9. Permanent Resident Alien Card (if applicable): If you are a permanent resident alien, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive a copy of both sides of your Permanent Resident Alien Card.

International Transfer Applicants

International transfer applicants must submit, in addition to those materials already listed, the following educational documents:

1. Official copy of high school record or transcripts. If not in English, a certified English translation is required.

2. Official copy of college or university transcripts. If not in English, a certified English translation is required.

3. A description of each course or subject studied (including textbook used and author) must be submitted. Applications without this information cannot be considered. Graduates of thirteen-year systems must submit syllabi for their final year of study.

4. Evaluation of international transcripts by a professional credential evaluation service. This is a requirement of the Office of the University Registrar. Having this done will aid the Admissions Committee and the University Registrar. A list of recommended agencies can be found in the application instructions.

Please Note:

It is the responsibility of each applicant to submit all required information and materials by the deadline and to ensure that the information is accurate. Completed applications will receive priority in the review process. Because of time constraints, it is not always possible for the admissions office to request missing information. Be sure to use your passport name on all forms and provide the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with your correct date of birth. When submitting supplemental materials separate from the application, make sure your name, U.S. Social Security number, and high school name are included on all pieces. Also, be sure to include your current name, if different from the name on the materials.

To help us and yourself, please review this section carefully. The university reserves the right to withdraw, without notice, any application that is not complete by the deadline.
