Applying as a Non-Degree-Seeking Student

How to Apply

There are two ways to apply for admission to Virginia Tech: online and using the traditional paper application. Virginia Tech expects all applicants to apply using the online application; however, if you are planning on using an official fee-waiver, you MUST apply using the paper application, and attach the fee-waiver to it upon submission.

You are a Non-Degree Applicant if you:

  • are a student who wants to take a few courses at Virginia Tech and transfer them back to your primary college/university.
  • are a highly qualified high school students at the junior or senior level who wants to get a head start on college requirements.
  • need to take a few courses to help in your career, for teacher certification, or self-enrichment.
  • have never been denied admission to Virginia Tech.

There are three enrollment options for applying for non-degree admission to Virginia Tech: apply online, download and print the application and submit it by mail or in person, or, for those wishing to take classes online, simply apply through VTOnline. Virginia Tech expects all applicants to apply using the online application; however, if you are planning on using an official fee-waiver, you MUST apply using the paper application, and attach the fee-waiver to it upon submission.

Enrollment Option 1: Apply Online

Our web application allows you to create a user account and define a password to access your application. You will be able to save your work and come back to it as often as you like until the application is completed. The application for Virginia In-State Tuition, or residency form, is included at the end of the application. Only students who think they qualify as Virginia residents need complete these pages.

Enrollment Option 2: Use the Paper Application

In order to successfully download the paper application, you must have a recent version of the free Adobe Reader software, version 5 or later.

Enrollment Option 3: Register for Online Classes

Non-degree students who want to take online courses should apply through VTOnline. A non-refundable $60 processing fee is required. Questions about online courses can be addressed to vto@vt.edu or 540-231-1264.

Supporting Materials

In addition to your completed application and application fee, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive all supporting materials in order to complete your application file. For a complete list of what is needed, please see the Application Checklist.

Application Changes

Once you have completed and paid for your application, you can send any necessary changes to us at appchange@vt.edu. See our application changes page for more information.

Please DO NOT set up a new account and submit a secondary application to make changes to a completed/paid application. No refunds will be given for secondary application fees.

Deadlines

It's important to take note of the dates and deadlines in the application process. A complete application file that includes the application, the application fee, and all supporting information will receive priority during review.

In-State Tuition

Students who are Virginia residents need to fill out and submit the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates (PDF). If applicants have questions about residency, they can contact our office.

Check Your email

Applicants need to provide the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with a valid email address and check it often, as there are many instances when we need to communicate with applicants during the application review period.
