When a student is admitted to the university, the university reserves the right to provide a copy of that student's first-year grade report or transcript to the last institution attended prior to enrolling at Virginia Tech. This report will be shared in such a way as to protect the student's privacy. This information is provided to assist the previous school in improving its students' academic preparation. Virginia Tech is not aware of any consequences that would arise as a result of a student's objection to the release of his or her information (Section 2.1 - 382, Code of Virginia, as amended).

Social Security Numbers will continue to be required by all students enrolled at Virginia Tech. The Tax Relief Act of 1997, IRS Sect. 6050s, Sect 25A, stipulates that the university report to the Internal Revenue Service and to every student any potential qualifying tuition expenses. The identifier for this reporting is the Social Security Number as the taxpayer identification number. The Social Security Number will not be displayed on any printed academic record and will not be required for student identification purposes.
Due to state legislation, information on all students offered admission to Virginia’s public institutions of higher learning may be submitted to the state police for checking against the sexual offender registry.
