What We Look For: Transfer

Academic Requirements for Transfer Students

Admission is offered on a competitive basis to transfer applicants as long as space is available in their chosen fields of study. Students are considered transfer applicants if they have formally enrolled at another college or university and attempted 12 or more hours at any time following graduation from high school.

Please note: The most important factors considered for admission are: completion or substantial progress toward completing prerequisite courses, particularly freshman English, math , and science appropriate for the intended major; and overall GPA in college course work. Although the admissions committee considers applicants with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale), most competitive applicants will present a GPA of 3.0 or better. In majors where applications exceed available space, such as architecture, business, communication, computer science, industrial design, and engineering, the competitive GPA may be even higher.

Transfer applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of Virginia Tech’s core curriculum requirements, especially those who have completed two years at a Virginia community college, will receive preference in the admission process. Applicants are encouraged to visit Virginia Tech’s Transfer Equivalency Database for course equivalents at Virginia community colleges or other two- and four-year institutions.

Transfer applicants, including those who have completed an associate’s degree, must:

  • have completed all entrance requirements, or the equivalent in a college program, for all entering students (see Freshman Academic Requirements).
  • be in good standing at all colleges and universities attended.
  • in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, present credentials of "B" or higher in courses of Freshman English, Mathematics (as required by the specific major) and Science (as required by the specific major). Applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of Virginia Tech's core curriculum, especially those who have completed an associate's degree at a Virginia two-year college, receive preference in the admission process. See the Transfer Guide for more information.

Transfer Credentials

In order for your application file to be complete, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive the following:

  • A completed application for admission.
  • A $50 application fee; check or money order payable to Treasurer, Virginia Tech ($70 for international applications).
  • A typed or written statement outlining all academic and work experience since graduation from high school and reasons why you wish to transfer to Virginia Tech.
  • Transcripts from every college or university attended. If you are currently enrolled, you should enclose two official transcripts from your current institution after completion of at least one semester, plus official transcripts from every previous college in sealed envelopes. If you are not currently enrolled, please note that fact on the application form under “College Info” and enclose two official transcripts from every previous college in sealed envelopes.
  • Applicants should have completed at least one full semester of college work prior to submitting an application for admission.
  • A list of current courses, if currently enrolled.
  • An official copy of your final high school transcript.

Foreign Language Requirement

By the time they graduate from the university, students must meet a language study requirement.

For most majors, the minimum requirement may be met in high school by completing 2 units of a single foreign or classical language (3 units for those students who will graduate from certain majors within Virginia Tech’s College of Science and College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences). The requirement also may be met after admission by one of the following:

  • Earning 6 semester hours of college-level foreign or classical language credit. Such credits are in addition to that number normally required for graduation in a student’s program of study.
  • Receiving credit by examination for a foreign or classical language.

International Transfer Applicants

If any of your previous or current education has been or is currently in an international education system, please submit the international application.

We require extra information for transfer applicants who have completed or are completing courses at an international college or university. See the international application checklist or the international application instructions for a full list of what is needed from international transfer applicants.
