Fisheries science, offered through the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, focuses on the study, conservation, and sustainable use of aquatic animals and ecosystems. Virginia Tech's program is one of the nation’s largest in freshwater fisheries, emphasizing management of recreational fisheries and endangered species.
Most graduates work for public fisheries management agencies, environmental consulting firms, or public utilities. Options are offered for both freshwater and marine fisheries sciences. Because many jobs in this field require a master’s degree, the program emphasizes preparation for graduate school.
Fisheries Science is a part of the College of Natural Resources & Environment. Majors in this college may share high school preparation requirements as well as common coursework at Virginia Tech.
