Horticulture is the original Green Industry. We make a real difference in the world by designing and installing sustainable urban greenspaces that provide not only pleasing landscapes but also the ecosystem services of carbon sequestration, cooling, and stormwater mitigation. Horticulturists also grow fruit, vegetables, wine grapes, and nursery and greenhouse crops for local markets and for export by utilizing ecologically friendly farming methods.
Our students major in either Landscape Contracting or Environmental Horticulture. The Landscape Contracting major offers a concentration in design/build or establishment/maintenance and all students minor in Entrepreneurship in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. Our Environmental Horticulture major offers concentrations in sustainable vegetable and fruit production, sustainable green industry, or horticultural science. Demand for our students is very high, and near 100% find gainful employment upon graduation. Students that concentrate in horticultural science position themselves well for graduate school and stimulating careers in fundamental or applied research.
Horticulture is a part of the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. Majors in this college may share high school preparation requirements as well as common coursework at Virginia Tech.
