Management

Management is the process of achieving organizational goals through the coordination of material, financial, and human resources. In the management major, students are provided with an integrated perspective on the overall operation of the organization. Our programs prepare men and women to be effective managers in the global economy with an entrepreneurial approach to business. We emphasize the development of versatile skills that are essential to achieve organizational goals: analytical problem-solving, communication skills, cross-functional thinking, leadership, ethical decision-making, and team work.

Students can choose from two tracks within the major: human resource management and entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology management. Experiential learning is stressed throughout the major through internships, consulting projects, and service learning.

Leadership and ethics are themes that cut across all courses. The department’s Business Leadership Center sponsors an annual symposium on business ethics and several other leadership conferences throughout the year. The business leadership minor, available to students of all majors, is administered in this center.

A new business diversity minor, administered by the Management Department’s Business Diversity Center, began in the 2008-2009 academic year and is available to students throughout the university. Completing the business diversity minor will help graduates not only to manage and lead, but also to interact with and follow others in a diversified workplace.

Because of the versatility of the degree, management graduates find jobs in many sectors of industry as well as in government agencies and non-profit organizations.

Pamplin College of Business

Management is a part of the Pamplin College of Business. Majors in this college may share high school preparation requirements as well as common coursework at Virginia Tech.
